In 1922 Nurse Renee’ Caisse was given a formula from the Ojibway Indians of Canada. She named it Essiac, and began to treat cancer patients with it.
The original formula was a tea using burdock root, slippery elm inner bark, sheep sorrel and turkey rhubarb root.
It is believed the natural herbs help normalizing body functions by cleansing the blood, purging toxins while promoting cell repair and aiding in elimination of toxic compounds.
Burdock root has long been used to clean the blood, increase urination, and as a laxative. It has been studied in the laboratory for its anti-tumor qualities.

Sheep sorrel has been studied for its anti-cancer qualities and has been claimed to be effective by many.
Turkey rhubarb is antioxidative and has a strong laxative effect.
